Slippery crooks escape from police vehicle

Police hunt for escaped prisoners

Police are looking for two suspects who escaped from a moving police truck at Alikhine Street between Chiawelo and Protea on August 21.

The suspects were due to appear at the Protea Magistrate Court on charges of murder and armed robbery and were being transported from  Johannesburg Central Prison.

According to police, the suspects forced open the grating which secured the window, creating an opening before they could escape.

Police reacted swiftly and prevented other prisoners from escaping. The first suspect was arrested by the Diepkloof police in connection with a carjacking and a business robbery at the Terrace Signet Mall in Lenasia, South of Johannesburg.

The second suspect was arrested for murder in Naledi. The suspect and two accomplices shot and killed a Mozambican man while they were robbing him last year (November 14).

Police have launched a manhunt in the hopes of re-arresting the escapees.

Moroka police spokesperson, Mpande Khoza said, “We would appreciate any help from the community which may lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“Anyone with any information about their whereabouts may contact the investigating officer, detective constable Walter Masuku from the Naledi police on 078 747 5933,” said Khoza.
