From August 1 to 31, South Africa celebrates Women’s Month in commemorating the historic march that took place over 60 years ago.

Tens of thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings, on August 9, 1956, in protest against the extension of the Pass Laws to women.

The march was led by four women and was coordinated by the Federation of South African Women. The four women were Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams De Bruyn.

These leaders delivered petitions indicating their anger and frustration at having their freedom of movement restricted by the hatred displayed by the official passes.

Since it is Women’s Month, many organisations host events in commemorating women, but if you would like to be part of the movement that Ekklesia Creative Spaces will be having a business workshop, themed ‘Empowering ideas and moving it into reality’on August 23 at the JD Opperman Centre, is the place to be.
