Liverpool FC won their away leg in Germany from the Rhein-Neckar-Arena against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim by 2-1.
An expertly taken free kick goal in the 35th minute by Trent Alexander-Arnold gave Liverpool the lead.
The hosts, who are tournament debutants, gave it their all but went to halftime trailing by a goal.
Liverpool, who had less of the possession, managed to counterattack in the 74th minute at which substitute James Milner scored.
Milner was attempting to play a cross to Mohamed Salah on the far-post when the ball got the slightest deflection before ending up in the back of the net.
Hoffenheim will have to score 2 goals to proceed to the next round of this exhilarating competition.
The win gives the Merseyside an advantage going into the 2nd leg play-off of the UEFA Champions League 2017/18.
