Shocking electrical issues in Eldorado Park Ext 7

"We can't even take a bath or shower because we are afraid of being electrocuted."

Electricity, though an essential in many homes across the country can also be lethal, especially when one comes into contact with exposed live wires. Many lives have been lost in the Nancefield area as a result of victims being exposed to live wires.

In Vermont and Ohio Street in Eldorado Park Extension Seven, the community is faced with a dangerous situation.

The six houses affected by this dangerous situation are house numbers 22, 29, 31 32, 33 in Ohio Street and 34 in Vermont Street.

According to residents, they have been experiencing electrical difficulties when attempting to use their electrical appliances and their bathrooms in which the geyser provides the supply of hot water.

Jenny Modley said, “We can’t even take a bath or shower because we are afraid of being electrocuted, we have to wash in a bucket.”

For many people, this is seen as an inconvenience as well as resulting in those affected resorting to less-than-hygienic standards.

Modley explained that she also experienced an electrical shock in June after exiting her gate and feeling an acute spasm in her leg which she felt as an electrical current.

On July 31, the community decided that they had had enough and they took to the streets in protest after the streetlight pole’s anchor which had been cut off, caught fire.

This left them fearful and angry that there was a known fault with the electrical supply to the area which was not being addressed satisfactorily.

Zaida Krauser said, “Our children play here, what if this light pole falls on one of them or us? The maintenance workers even told us that the situation was hazardous.”

According to Krauser, the anchor, earth and neutral wires were cut by City Power representatives.

On the same night, a Vermont Street resident’s television burst into flame after the light pole caught fire. Krauser said, “Can you picture this, what if there was no one in that house, the house would have probably burned down.”

Virgil James, City Power spokesperson said, ‘The issue of the residents that have complained about a street pole that is teetering over and is likely to fall, will be addressed as soon as possible because we do believe that this has been reported previously and the anchor that holds the pole has been removed by City Power technicians themselves.

“I am not sure what the reason for this is, however, we’ll have to address this as a matter of urgency as it poses a danger to residents.”

Krauser also said that many appliances in the different households have blown fuses or stopped as a result and has demanded that City Power compensate them for their losses as they are unemployed and cannot afford to replace them.

Residents want to be reimbursed for damaged appliances.
