‘Science is not my nemesis’

"I love all kinds of subjects but I think science is one of my best subjects."

For many scholars, mathematics and science are their academic arch nemeses as they experience learning difficulties when it comes to theses greatly feared subjects.

For some, maths is not much of a challenge but science is a whole new ball game. Many scholars suggest that science, on the whole, is not a problem.

They feel that physical science is easy but the experiment blows up in their faces when it comes to chemistry.

Jordan Roux (10), a Grade 5 learner at Cavendish Primary School in Extension 6 is not having any trouble with her measurements. The ten-year-old is taking big strides when in her academic career.

After participating in a Science and Technology Olympiad with approximately 20 schools competing, Roux took first place at a district level.

She said, “I didn’t really think was going to do so well but I felt very excited and shocked at the same time.”

“I love all kinds of subjects but I think science is one of my best subjects.”

Mervyn Louw, principal at the school said, “We are so proud of Jordan who has done extremely well to excel on that level and obtain first place in this competition.

“We are proud to have Jordan at our school and at Cavendish we want to give each learner the opportunity to excel in all learning areas.

“In this particular case, we would just like to say well done to Jordan who has not only done herself proud but also her family and the school.”

Roux participated in the Science and Technology Olympiad which took place at Sci-Bono on August 5, where participants numbers increased to about 160 schools.

The young prodigy is waiting on tenterhooks for the results to be released and has started her own business.
