“Police officers should wear bulletproof vests at all times”

Police warned to stay vigilant at all times

Dobsonville Police Station commander Brigadier Azwindini Nengovhela described the recently slain constable Akani Mongwe as the most dedicated police officer ever to have served under his command.

Speaking at the Mongwe’s memorial service at the Lutheran Church in Dobsonville, Brigadier Nengovhela asked fellow police officers why the life of such a young and dedicated police officer was cut short.

“We should ask ourselves whether his death was preventable or not?

“As police officers, we should look at various factors leading to constable Mongwe’s death.

“Dishonest police officers’ harsh judgments might be passed onto them one day,” said Nengovhela.

He reminded fellow police officers that a large number of firearms are often being lost or stolen in their custody and asked what if the cartridge which killed the fallen officer were fired from a rifle stolen from police safes.

Nenghovela warned police officers who are in collusion with criminals not to cry for a slain police officer on such occasions because they are as accountable as the person who fired the fatal shot.

“A police officer’s duty is to serve and save people’s lives but they should first protect themselves.

“Police officers should wear bulletproof vests at all times. I will forever miss the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the late constable Mongwe.

“He left behind his son, wife and extended family,” said Nengovhela.
