Diepkloof: Staying safe this winter

"We urge our brothers and men in the community to accompany the ladies in the morning and at night."

During this winter season, it gets darker earlier and in the morning it takes longer for the sun to chase away the darkness, so Diepkloof police have set out on an awareness campaign in which they urge residents to be vigilant and to exercise caution as criminals took advantage of the dark to commit crimes during this season.

Zenzile Tshabalala of the Diepkloof Community Policing Forum (CPF) said that it was wiser-especially for women- that residents always travel in groups when going to work in the morning and when returning home.

Tshabalala said, “In fact, women should organise whistles and always keep them at hand because criminals in Diepkloof often take advantage of the darkness and scarcity of people and we urge our brothers and men in the community to accompany the ladies in the morning and at night.”

He said that people should avoid secluded places and the ubiquitous passageways which are favoured by the criminal element.

Tshabalala said, “We have experienced many instances where women go out partying with total strangers and get violated and raped as a result, so we appeal to women to be cautious and rather stay home if they don’t have money to go out partying.”

According to Tshabalala, who was speaking on behalf of the Diepkloof CPF, people have a tendency of taking advantage of their lovers and partners, and false cases are brought to the station and this compromises true cases which deserve the attention and resources of the station.

He said, “If people feel confused and hurt, there are professionals to consult for counselling.”

“People experiencing stress and depression are also invited for free counselling.”

Any person who feels any violation of their privacy and rights from a number of abuses may seek advice at the Diepkloof Police Station.
