Service in Motion (SIMs) along with partners extended their 67 minutes to the community of Riverlea Extension on July 22.

This was the second year which the organisation took the initiative to bless families in Riverlea.

Due to the large number of people they catered for last year, SIMs needed to partner with a number of other organisations in order to get the job done.

The partners for the Madiba day celebration were Choose Life, Christ Centred Ministry, Dare2Read, Scholtz Family and DuFunc.

The programme began with prayer, praise, and worship with AFM Gravity Youth and Christ Centred Ministry. Thereafter residents were each given an opportunity to take three clothing items.

SIM’s has an ongoing clothing drive and all partners were tasked with collecting clothing as well.

Each partner was requested to cook a meal to feed about 250 people. The choice of food was left to the partners to decide.

The vegetable packs, sweets, and cakes were provided by SIM. The organisation has sponsors who contribute financially to their programmes.

“People see from the photos on Facebook and social media what we do, so when we ask, they know their blessings will be used for that required purpose.

“Our next project will be looking for donors to assist with Christmas food hampers,” said Sheldon Morgan.

Children also got their face painted and entertainment was provided by DaFunc and SIM singers. Tere was face painting and for children and games such as tug of war. The two feeding sessions of the day reached about 2000 people.

Morgan explains why they chose Riverela Extension: “It’s because of the logistics and poverty in the area. We have regular feeding sessions in the Newestcoborn areas, but the biggest number of people who benefitted were from Zombie.

“They have a unique system of informing everyone about the feeding sessions. I informed the lady in the last street and as they walk up they spread the word hence we dish 280 meals.”

According to Morgan, it was the many happy faces and full stomachs which barred testimony to a day of service.

The servants who assisted on the day said in one voice that they will do it again and that’s what motivates Morgan even more.

He added that it is only by God’s grace that they are able to serve his people. Planning for next year has already begun.

Children all had their face painted.
