Mandela Month: A fruitful life lesson planted in the soil of Westbury

Remember to plant a seed of making a difference

Just recently, children from Westbury were motivated to follow their dreams, taught how to plant a tree and their stomachs were filled by Motheo Construction Group at the Westbury Golf Driving Range.

Motheo Construction Group is currently building the transformation centre where the old Saint Barnabas College was at the corner of Harmony Street and Main Road.

The company is owned by Dr Thandi Molokwane and has been in existence for the past 20 years.

On Mandela Day, employees from the company and students volunteered their time to make a difference in the lives of the children in Westbury.

According to Lettie Mashao, the company has it deep in its heart to build relationships in every community they work in.

Lettie Mashao is the first to contribute towards planting the fruit trees.

“We felt that building a community starts with the little ones and that’s why today we are here to plant trees which represent life and we are spending time with the little ones because they are the future of this country. It’s not only for the 67 minutes, or about the company but it’s about what we leave in the community,” she said.

They donated 30 fruit trees to the community which were planted in the field of the golf driving range, they fed about 150 children boerewors rolls and provided them with a cool drink as well.

Other construction companies and organisations were also there to show their support in the community.

The children who were present were encouraged to go home and draw or write their dreams out so that they can keep it alive.

Hard working students of Motheo assist the children with the planting of the fruit trees.

The message shared by Rachel Morake was that “like the roots of a tree needs good soil to grow and be strong let our dreams be powerful enough to break through the negativity and just like the stem supports the plant let us support each other in the community in reaching our dreams and making a difference.

And just as the leaves make food, let us too provide for each other in our community and just like the flowers make the seeds let us be like those flowers that make good seeds and produce good fruits.

“As we plant our trees today, remember to plant a seed of education, a seed of graduating, a seed to starting your own business, remember to plant a seed of making a difference.”

The construction manager of Motheo, Gavin Munro explained how the trees should be planted and the children were given the opportunity to plant the tree in the hope of receiving fruits from them in the future.
