Taxi commuters remain unsafe

Mbulelo Nedzata wants women abuse to stop in the taxi industry.

While taxis violence is spiralling out of control over lucrative routes in most parts of the country, commuters are the worst affected segment of the population and are often overlooked in these squabbles.

In recent taxi violence incidents which erupted in the Tshepisong Township, a passenger was killed and two other commuters were injured in attacks by a rival taxi association.

Taxi violence continues despite the provincial Department of Transport MEC Ismail Vadi‘s repeated calls for disputed taxi routes be temporarily closed until a solution to the problem is sought.

The Dobsonville Urban News reporter spoke to taxi commuters who use this mode of transport daily.

Mandla Nkozwane (42) said commuters are not safe anymore when taxi violence erupts.

“Violent perpetrators often shoot indiscriminately and passengers are caught in the crossfire.

“Government should strengthen security on the roads and heavy penalties should be issued to the warring parties.”

Another commuter, Mxolisi Dada (30) said it is very disturbing when commuters board the taxi without their safety being guaranteed.

“We have children who are now orphans because of taxi violence.”

Lucky Mvambi (32), said it was disturbing that taxi associations involved in the fight are ignoring the country’s gun regulations.

“It is high time that police enforce the law and keep our routes safe for all those who use it.”

Mbulelo Nedzata (31) said violence should be looked at from both sides.

“Women are often verbally abused by taxi operators. We should start by addressing that in a bid to clean up the mess that is within the taxi industry.”
