Mayor no show, but job continues

"People waited about 23 years for their title deeds."

The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba was expected to handover 300 title deeds at Braamfischerville Community Centre last Monday but failed to attend the event.

According to the Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Themba Floyd, there was an urgent matter which needed Mashaba’s attention.

However, Floyd said that despite the mayor’s absence, the job at hand would continue.

“People waited about 23 years for their title deeds under the African National Congress (ANC) administration.

“Today we are addressing that in less than a year of this new administration in office. A total of 300 people from Braamfischerville will be getting their title deeds,” said Floyd.

His sentiments were also shared by Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) PR councillor Pinkie Nkhwenkwana.

She said the EFF will continue to fight for the basic needs of the people on the ground.

Councillor Nkhwenkwana said as part of the coalition government in the City of Johannesburg, they were pleased that people would finally be receiving their title deeds.

Ward 49 councillor, Mandla Mlangeni said MEC of Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile started the process of issuing of 200 title deeds in Braamfischerville and surrounding areas last month.

“This is the second handover of this kind during this winter period in the area. Intended beneficiaries should be in possession of call note, South African Identity Document and a letter from the Department of Human Settlements.

“It is only then that the intended beneficiary will the title deed to his or her house,” said Mlangeni.

Department of Human Settlements staff was present and issued title deeds to beneficiaries at the community centre.

Mlangeni said they were made aware that the executive mayor Mashaba would not attend last Friday after they received an email from his office.

Despite the mayor being absent from the event, beneficiaries were excited to hold the title deeds in their hands.

Moipato Motlatsi, a beneficiary from Braamfischerville said she used to rent a room in Meadowlands and moved to Braamfischerville 10 years ago.

“This document means that I’m now a full home owner for the first time in my life.

“This is the greatest moment in my life and I will cherish it for many years to come. The DA and EFF government in the City of Johannesburg put the needs of the people first,” she said.
