Mandela Month: Coronationville old folk’s visits Frederick Place

Frail care receives handmade warm gifts for Mandela Day

Frederick Place Old Age Home in Coronationville hosted different organisations and helpers who volunteered their 67 minutes to honour the late statesman Nelson Mandela.

Three members from the Coronationville Old Folks Club visited the home to distribute hand knitted and crochet scarves, jerseys, and beanies for the frail care division at the home.

The fail care patients had just finished their breakfast when Jennifer Ali who is the chairlady of the club, and two other members Emelda Bartman and Kathleen May, with the help of Isaac Ismail, came into the eating area to distribute their handmade warm winter necessities.

“These are the elderly, they are our own crown jewels, they should be respected and honoured and that’s why we are here.

“We all from Coronation and that’s the reason why we are here to do this for them today,” said Emelda Bartman.

According to the chairlady, the club consists of 22 members and all of them started knitting and others who could crochet started last year with the project. Their aim was to have all the products finished and ready for hand over today.

The club focuses on helping and representing the community of Coronationville by attending events, participating in games hosted by the City of Johannesburg.

On July 21, the members of the Coronationville Old Folks will participate in the Choir Festival in Krugersdorp.

The next projects for the senior citizen club are to now work on raising funds for their planned end of year getaway tour to Mossel Bay, each member is required to pay R5600 to go on the trip.

One of these fund raisings will be held on August 26, at Club Salsa where the senior citizens club will host a Grand Pre-Spring Ball from 8 pm.

Nonetheless, the frail care patients were thankful for the knitted and crochet attire, a number of them could not speak but one could see it in their eyes.
