CCTV to ensure safety in Vilakazi Street following Sakhumzi shooting

Vilakazi Steet is the only street in the world that boasts the homes of two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, former president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and is one of South Africa’s major tourist attractions.

Today, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, launched the newly installed CCTV Cameras on Vilakazi Street.

This follows the shooting incident at Sakhumzi Restaurant earlier this year.

The CCTV camera system is expected to improve the level of safety of businesses and business owners, the public and tourists coming in and out of Vilakazi Street.

In a statement released by the City of Joburg, the mayor said, “The businesses along Vilakazi Street are important to the economy of not only Orlando West and Soweto, but also of Johannesburg as a whole, and the CCTV camera system will ensure that security in the area is enhanced in an effort to protect both the business owners, as well as visitors.”
