A Sunday drive with SouthSide

Motor junkies were treated to an afternoon of polished bodies and roaring engines as the SouthSide Crew hosted their annual motor show at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.

On July 9, the Johannesburg Expo Centre played host to a Sunday filled with motor car fanatics as the SouthSide Crew presented their annual Nasrec car show and competition.

‘German vs Jap’ was the theme for the highly anticipated motor car event and attendees embraced the rivalry by displaying their best Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Honda, Acura and Suzuki vehicles amongst others.

A sum total of R20 000 in cash prize money was up for grabs. The competition was divided into three categories, including stance, park-off and limbo.

Hundreds of attendees spent the afternoon excitedly strolling between on-display motor cars while competitors ensured that their vehicles were show-day ready with last minute touch-ups.

Attendees had the opportunity to view the engines and bodywork of each car while watching demonstrations, as owners showed off just what their muscle machines were made of.

A classic car motor show displayed a variety of ‘Golden Oldies’ and attendees adorned over the old-school finishes and pre-2000 mechanical ingenuity.

Along with extensive viewings, attendees were able to enjoy a helicopter ride around the Nasrec Expo Centre and strap in the back of a SupaDrift car as it expertly drifted and smoked its way around a course.

Participants and viewers were left breathless as the SupaDrift team performed daring stunts and coordinated drifting routines.

The crowd was left on the edge of their seats in anticipation of what would happen next.

The youngsters were treated to a mini race car driving experience and had the option to compete in some fun go-karting.

Attendees were also spoilt for choice with a variety of food and clothing stalls, including a prawn festival and beer garden.

One of the highlights of the event was the ‘Low Limbo’ competition, which saw participants put their car’s air suspension to the test as they tried to get as low as possible and make it under the limbo pole.

Best Jap and Best German winners still to be announced.
