Chiawelo: Block 88 locals walk the streets

We want to go back to the days of Ubuntu.

Block 88 had a Youth Month Event at Block 88 Concept Store in Chiawelo next to the flats. According to Siya Ndzonga of Block 88, the event was aimed at youth development and creating social responsibilities in their community.

“We want to go back to the days of Ubuntu by raising the awareness such as responsibility in our society,” said Ndzonga.
Activities of the day included a fun walk. “We had a fun walk to encourage a healthy lifestyle and exercising.

“The walk was also focusing on youth development and building a drug and violent free society. The walk took place in the morning and the community from Chiawelo flats and Mapetla joined and some from different parts of Soweto.

“After the walk there was a ruffle and Block 88 gave away four Palladium boots to four participants. In the afternoon there was a live painting where artists came through to paint and create images for the children to paint in them.

“Later on there was a street art event and artists were illustrating paintings on the wall and after that the children were involved in painting.

“We had Others Concept Space Organisation from Dube joining us for the event and they made stencils for the children to paint and we selected four best paintings from the children that participated in the street art and gave them Palladium boots,” said Ndzonga, a youngster, Kim Baah who was involved in painting said she loves art and wants to be a well known artist in future.

Block 88 is a street wear store situated next to the flats.
