Sophiatown police succeed with the community’s guidance.

A 32-year-old man was arrested for dealing in drugs.

Since 1987, the United Nations (UN) has been working to create a society which is free from drug abuse. Yesterday marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the day is set to raise awareness of the serious drug issues in the society.

Results from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) illustrate that nearly 200 million people are using drugs such as cocaine, cannabis, hallucinogens, opiates, and sedative-hypnotic worldwide.

The day which is a global observance also encourages organisations and communities to fight against the drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Prior to this day, the Sophiatown police received a tip-off from the community who identified drug houses in the Sophiatown Precinct.

The police conducted an operation on June 22 and managed to arrest a 32-year-old man for dealing in drugs, the police also confiscated drugs at the premises with a street value of R32 000.

According to the Sophiatown communications officer, Jerbes de Bruyn the drugs were hidden inside the suspects oven. “More of these operations will be conducted to ensure a safer environment for all,” said de Bruyn.
