Soccer enthusiasts flock for the Steven Pienaar tournament

Thirty-two teams from all over the country battle it out in the annual Steven Pienaar open league tournament which was held at Westbury Soccer Grounds last weekend.

Each group consists of four teams and only two top teams qualified to get to the next round of the competition.

In Group A, S.T Ganitus was the overall winners in their group and the first runner up was Codessa F.C. In Group B, Glamour FC and Hustlers FC both finished off with 6 points but a goal difference of 2 managed to place Glamour FC in the top of group B.

Defending champions Strokes FC came up on top of Group C placing Freez Dev. in second place. In Group D, FC Jimmy was the overall winners in the group leaving Noordgesig United as the runner-up.

Group E had La Masia and Soweto All-Stars battling it out for the top spot, both teams had 6 points but La Masia won the group stage by a 2 goal difference. In Group F, Snack FC came up on the top with 7 points with Ponyek coming in the second place with 6 points in the group.

Delux FC and Donchesters was top of Group G, with Delux FC won by 1 point more than Donchesters 6 points. In Group H, Wattville FC was the overall winners in their group, Mnandi XI was the first runners-up.

The tournament will continue this weekend, June 16 will be the finals for the Jowest Local Football Association (LFA), and the finals for the LFA super league and the open league will be held on Sunday, June 18 at the Union Stadium (the Oval), Westbury.

Whilst the LFA compete in their finals, the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played on the Westbury grounds on Friday and Saturday. First games kick off at 10:00 am and there will be gate taking of R10 per car, all contributions will be given to the Westbury Primary School.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department will also be working around the clock to ensure that the environment is a safe and secure one.

Chairman of the Steven Pienaar committee, Bjorn Dearman stated that if you thought last weekend was hot, then this weekend’s games will blow your mind.

The stadium is expected to be filled to its capacity and he advised that the community should come early.
