Know your Councillor, Ward 69 (Genevieve Sherman)

From Davidsonville to Ward Councillor.

Genevieve Sherman is the councillor for Ward 69 where she oversees the Brixton, Westdene, Westbury, Coronationville, Rossmore, Hursthill, Melville (Meldene side) areas.

Sherman (48) who currently resides in Riverlea Ext 2, grew up in Davidsonville, Roodepoort said that her childhood memories are those of a very warm, happy and secure environment.

During her spare time, the councillor considers her love for reading, arts, and entertainment as her hobbies.

In the 1980’s, Sherman found her interest in politics when she became a student activist during the apartheid era.

Moving on to Ward 69 issues, the councillor mentioned that the ward faces issues of general service delivery, housing, unemployment and drug abuse.

In solving these issues, Sherman said that she is working closely with Maintenance of Effort (MOE’s) and engaging with them constantly for effective service delivery.

She is also partnering with the communities, non-governmental organisations (NGO’s), Community Action Groups, and engaging with residents on a transparent basis to allow all to work together for solutions.

“I have various projects with Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) and DID, Small Medium and Macro Enterprises (SMMEs’) are sourced as per policy and procedure,” said Sherman.

According to Sherman, her approaches to dealing with the ward has resulted in her successfully introducing and implementing projects with community participation.

Local Labour initiatives (Job Creation), as well as local SMME’s subcontracting opportunities, has been created for all current and new upcoming projects.

These projects are the Coronationville Senior Secondary School upgrade, Westbury Senior Secondary School upgrade, the Helen Joseph Hospital Pathology and Mortuary Construction.

The Westdene dam NMT project with its Phase 2 Project. The City Power cable infrastructure project, TDC Project in Westbury, the Slovo Bridge Construction and the MTN Cabling project in Coronationville.

Public meetings are held for residents in the various sections in the ward and the information will be published as a public notice.
