Are you a smoker? Well, it’s never too late to call it quits

Tobacco is a deadly threat to global development.

The World Health Organisation says it remains open to partnerships with other groups prepared to tackle tobacco use. The organisation believes that tobacco use has a negative impact on the lives of people because households often have to include a pack of cigarettes in their budget – resulting in less cash for groceries or other commitments.

According to a statement published on the WHO website: “Tobacco is a deadly product that kills more than 7 million people every year, and costs the global economy more than US$ 1.4 trillion annually in healthcare expenditure and lost productivity.”

The organisation has designed a framework for tobacco control in which stakeholders converge into one to conversate about the problem and strategies to vigorously oppose tobacco use.

WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control summits will be taking place as follows:

  • 12 – 14 June 2017, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Global Meeting on the Implementation of Articles 17 and 18 of the WHO FCTC: Taking action to protect tobacco farmers and the environment
  • 20 – 22 June 2017, Luanda, Angola – Technical meeting on preparation of official reports on implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
  • 16 – 18 August 2017, New Delhi, India – Inter-Party and expert consultation on smokeless tobacco control policy
