Welcoming Ramadan at the Bosmont Masjid

Young and old joined in for a weekend of pre-Ramadan festivities at the Bosmont Masjid.

On May 27, 2017, Muslims from around the country and around the globe will partake in the holiest month of the year, Ramadan.

Ramadan occurs during the ninth month of the lunar-based Islamic Calendar (Hijri) and sees all Muslims unite in a month-long (29 to 30 days) period of daytime fasting.

The annual fast of Ramadan is considered one of the five Pillars of Islam, (one of five deeds which mold a Muslim’s life).

Throughout the fast, Muslims who are physically able, abstain from food, drink and various other physical needs (i.e. smoking) during daylight hours, from sunrise until sunset.

Ramadan is not merely about the physical restraints and effects of the fast, however, but it also serves as a time for Muslims to rededicate themselves to Islam, reflect on their spirituality and reevaluate their lives in line with the guidance of Islam and its teachings.

It entails the complete commitment of a person’s body, mind, and soul to the fast. Ramadan is also seen as a time to purify the soul and practice self-discipline and sacrifice while realising gratitude.

“Fasting is important to me because it’s not just about fasting and not eating. It’s more about sacrifice and getting to know how the poor and less fortunate feel, so it makes you appreciate what you have and it makes you appreciate life,” says Yazeed Sataar (21), an attendee at last weekend’s Bosmont Masjid pre-Ramadan community Fete, which conducted from 20 until 21 May.

The Fete was held in honour and anticipation of the upcoming new month of Ramadan. The pre-Ramadan Bosmont Masjid Fete saw young and old, engage in the commemorative festivities of the weekend.

The lively atmosphere was filled with the anticipation and enjoyment of the attendees, with many using the opportunity to soak up the last of the summer sun.

Friends and families enjoyed the weekend together, in the company of familiar faces and the local Imam.

The air was filled with the sound of drumming, praise music, and singing, as well as the delicious aromas of the vast food stalls.

The various stalls were plentiful with fresh produce, home cooked meals, sweet snacks, condiments, clothing, and accessories, ensuring that there was something for everyone.

The event was also attended by the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA), AWQAF SA Healthcare and the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Health Sciences, who provided various free healthcare services and check-ups for the attendees.

The community came out in their numbers to support the local affair and its traders while welcoming in the new month of Ramadan before it begins this weekend. Ramadan will conclude on June 25, 2017, where after Eid al-Fitr begins, a three-day holiday and celebration marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next Islamic lunar month.
