Bubbly Karabo died on her journey to fighting women abuse

Her body found with tyre around her.

The bubbly Karabo Mokoena (22) of Diepkloof died gruesomely on her journey to helping abused women and finding her inner peace.

Her traumatised family reported her missing at the Diepkloof SAPS, where, according to Brigadier Jerry Malesela, an officer was deployed to accompany the family to Sandton where she had been living with a boyfriend.

A footage from April 28, was retrieved at the place that Karabo and the boyfriend stayed, and in the footage, she appeared walking in with the boyfriend but was never seen coming out ever since.

The boyfriend was later seen in the footage walking out pushing a Pikitup bin.

The police and securities waited for the boyfriend to return and captured him immediately as he tried sneaking in the same room he exited pushing the bin.

Malesela said, “The boyfriend confessed to burning the young lady – so she could not be recognisable.”

Karabo’s friend from the neighbourhood in Diepkloof, Qinisela Ndwadwa said, “Karabo had a big heart.”

It is an irony, how the same person who was sternly against woman abuse and was vocal about it died a victim of women abuse.

Karabo was found with a tyre around her and her body seemed like it was set alight.

The Mokoena family and residents of Soweto and Diepkloof were enraged by this incident and took to social media their different emotions and frustrations.

Tsholofelo Tshwanelo Lesutha on Facebook wrote, “I’m heartbroken too, as I contemplate the tortures she was subjected to in her final moments. Her requests for him to stop, her possible apologies, the agony on her face and the flowing tears, her cries for help… It’s too poignant to even ponder.”

The community condemned boyfriend appeared in court on Friday, May 12 and was rescheduled to appear again on May 24.

The memorial service will be held at the Multipurpose Community Hall in Diepkloof.
