Cleaned dumping areas polluted within weeks

'People should not dump trash anywhere, but we urge people to use rubbish bins'

The waste that is being dumped around the open spaces in Diepkloof may be the strength of the rats and insects that invade people’s homes, however, Pikitup deployed its workers to clean the dumping areas which get polluted within weeks again.

Last week Tuesday, a supervisor for Pikitup, Wandisa Phendu and her team of workers were in Diepkloof Zone One to clean the dumping area there that has become one of Diepkloof’s infamous dumping spots.

It is alleged that while the Pikitup crew was busy cleaning the area, a resident came with the bin to dump trash.

Phendu said, “We wish that the people would stop with the illegal dumping, keep the trash in the bins until the Pikitup truck arrives to empty them.”

Moloko Khumalo of Diepkloof Phase Three said, “It would be senseless for us to dump waste around our houses because it will return and create problems for us, people who are dumping here are not from around here.”

Vusumuzi Zimema was one of those Pikitup has hired to clean under a short-term contract, he said, “The hood is dirty, it needs people who are willing to work, and we are here. I wish Pikitup would hire as permanently.”

Thulisiwe Hlubi (15) from the neighbourhood said, “Illegal dumping is bad for the environment and can be a health hazard for the people. But the waste company’s inconsistency forces this circumstance.”

Aphiwe Malithi another cleaner in Pikitup overalls said, “People should not just dump trash anywhere, we know people have rights and all, but we urge people to use rubbish bins.”

Moses Malithi concluded that the goal is for Johannesburg to be world-class, he said, “The government should try to utilise the open spaces.
