What went down at Mayor Mashaba State of the City Address

Mashaba promises a pro-poor city in Joburg in his inaugural State of the City Address

The City of Johannesburg currently has an estimated 862000 unemployed people.

This is according to the city’s Mayor Herman Mashaba. The mayor made these revelations this morning during his first State of the City Address.

“By accepting and continuing with the projected 1.6% economic growth rate for our city, we will not be able to reverse the high rate of unemployment,” said Mashaba.

The high rate of unemployment is one of the challenges inherited from the previous administration as highlighted by the mayor.

In a bid to address this and various other challenges, the new administration has developed a Ten Point Plan as a guidance.

A responsive and a pro-poor government with a focus on redress, achieving a 5% economic growth by 2021, and producing an official housing waiting list are some of the key points in the plan.

Mashaba said, “Following what has failed before is not going to achieve change.”

In the 2017/18 financial year, 60% of the capital expenditure will go towards poor underserved communities.

This will include the supply of electricity with an allocation of R546 million.

As expected, the mayor sent a strong message about corruption saying “it will never be tolerated by his administration”.

While the state of the city shows the new administration’s optimism in economic growth, the poor will be prioritised.

“I’m committing this administration to the forgotten people of our city. In the past, this city left many people behind,” concluded the Mashaba.
