Westbury: Everlast Boxing Club

Pro boxer brings boxing to Corrie

Bjorn Moses, a professional boxer from the Newclare Flats started a boxing club at the Coronationville hall in order to provide an activity for the youth of the community.

The 31-year-old started boxing at the age of 15 at the Maraisburg boxing club, he then became a pro boxer in the year 2012.

According to Moses, he was supposed to start a boxing club in George but things didn’t go so well, therefore, he had to hit the gym again. It was only last year when he decided to start a boxing club in the community.

David Fisher (18) who will be graded in the next few weeks.

“I started the boxing club for the community because that is my heart’s desire to do it for the community and because you see the youngsters here in Westbury and Newclare, they have nothing to do after school, seeing that they only see drugs and all that stuff so I thought to myself that I must start it then,” said Moses.

Moses faces challenges with finding sponsors for the club as he said that the gym equipment is extremely expensive and some parents cannot afford to contribute to buying the equipment.

The young trainees have to take turns in using the boxing equipment and this affects the time they have during training.

Moses would like to purchase quality boxing equipment and attire but is currently struggling with funds.

He plans to charge a fee of R80 per boxer so that he can maintain the club and when the trainees eventually start participating in tournaments he will then need to take them to a doctor for check-ups before allowing them to participate.

Ethan Johnson (11).

David Fisher (18) from Newlands, is one of the young trainees that has already been spotted to go for grading in the next few weeks.

The ‘Everlast Boxing Club’ only exists for four months now but its doors are open to both girls and boys from any ages. Training is on a Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
