ANC Gauteng province mourns the passing of comrade Sipho Makama

A struggle icon to the Meadowlands Community

Comrade Sipho “Mshefane” Makama (53) passed away during a Passover church service on April 16.

An activist from a younger age, comrade Makama served with commitment and loyalty both within the ANC structure and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) where he served the people of Gauteng as an elected public representative for over 16 years.

Born in Alexandra in 1964 Makama grew up in Meadowlands, Soweto where he completed his matric at KwaMahlobo Senior Secondary School.

According to the Secretary of the ANC Gauteng province Hope Mankwana Papi, Makama was recruited into the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) by the vice president and his school friend the late Ivan Parage.

He was the membér of the Soweto coordinating committee of COSAS whilst the ANC was still banned.

After joining the Soweto Youth Congress (SOYCO) he was elected as the deputy chairperson of its Meadowlands branch.

“Comrade Makama belonged to the death-defying political generation of activists who responded to a clarion call by the liberation movement to make South Africa ungovernable and the apartheid system unworkable.

“This generation was given the title of “Young Lions” by the AND president Oliver Reginald Tango on behalf of the ANC  NEC,” said Papi.

At the time of his passing Makama was serving as the ANC  member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and a whip for the National Council of the Provinces.

“It is sad to lose an activist and a leader of Makama”s caliber at this critical time of the second phase of transition to a national democratic society.

“His passion as an activist was only matchĂ©d by his underlying interest in sports having played soccer, softball, pool and chess.”

“We convey our deepest condolences to the entire Makama family for the loss.

“Your loss is our loss we will continue to keep you in our prayers during this difficult period,” said Papo.

Details of the memorial and funeral service will be communicated once they become available.
