Permits required for long distance taxi drivers
Long distance taxi drivers are required to have operating licenses when driving outside the province.
The Department of Transport says taxi drivers who travel outside Gauteng are required to get temporary permits in order to transport passengers on long distance trips.
This will prevent their vehicles from being removed from the roads.
It is for the first time that drivers are required the permits and the agreement was made by the Government, the South African Council of Churches and taxi owners in Gauteng.
The permits will be issued to legal workers, with valid driver’s licences.
Drivers should apply for the permits three days before their trips.
Beauty Tsotetsi of the Department of Transport confirmed that every taxi must have the permit called Operating Licence.
A taxi driver, Themba Mkhize who transported passengers to Moria, said he had applied for the permit and is advising all the drivers who will be travelling outside the province to apply in order to be safe.
Another driver, Thabo Molefe said he transported people to Qwa Qwa in Free State and he will apply.
“I want my vehicle and my passengers to have a safe trip so I will apply for the permit,” said Molefe.
