Evolve SA is relentless in its initiative to continuously give back to the community of Jabavu. Its Kotula Upliftment programme is now extended to ensure that the community and not just the children at Diakonia Aids Ministry benefit from it.
“Kotula Upliftment programme does not only feed the kids at Diakonia but it also empowers the community by giving them garden/farming skills they can use to enhance their quality of lives,” said Mpho Mugivhi, Senior Manager/CSR Manager.
As soon as the schools closed, children at Diakonia Aids Ministry were given a week long training on garden/farming skills as a way to also keep them out of the streets.
Mugivhi explained that training the children will also benefit their families because they will use those skills to create their own gardens at home.
The children were trained by the support group which forms part of the garden team that take care of the Kotula gardens in the Central Western Jabavu community. The programme consists of both theory and fun-filled practicals. At the end of the week-long training, children were awarded certificates.
Evolve SA plans to offer more week long garden training, training to community members as well as training at schools.
The company currently has 11 farms that are feeding 4000 children per week. The ultimate goal is to feed 10 000 children per week by 2022.
“We are currently executing a modernisation programme across our farms with the view to heightening their productivity, this includes fixed irrigation and netting,” said Mugivhi.
