Noordgesig residents plead for jobs

Residents have appealed to their councillor to make sure that there is transparency with employment procedures in the area.

Residents of Noordgesig have pleaded with their ward councillor to be transparent when it comes to the issue of employment in their area.

This plea was made during a public meeting held at the community hall on Wednesday night last week.

Even though the meeting had a number of items on the agenda, the issue of unemployment, especially amongst young people, came under the spotlight.

Residents want their councillor Brenda Dammie to make sure that whenever there is a project coming to their area they are prioritised in terms of employment.

“We are pleading with you councillor to please make sure that there is transparency in the employment process,” said one resident Pat Mamabolo.

Pat Mamabolo from Noordgesig wants fairness when it comes to employment.

He was supported by many other residents who said even though Noordgesig falls under Ward 29 which includes Orlando, Diepkloof, and Pennyville, they should get first preference when employment opportunities arise in their area.

The councillor agreed with the people and promised to play her part in making sure that there are fairness and transparency in the employment process.

“I have been saying this and I will say it again, whenever a project comes to Noordgesig, the community must be the immediate beneficiaries. I will play my part in making sure that there is no corruption when it comes to employment.

“People should just make sure that they bring their CVs because it doesn’t make sense to complain about unemployment when you don’t even have a CV,” said Dammie.

The councillor condemned favouritism and nepotism saying she doesn’t have any family members in the area which makes it easier for her to have the best interests of the community at heart.

In the meeting, it was revealed that people from as far as Orange Farm use Noordgesig addresses in order to get employment when there is a project happening in the area. The councillor assured the community that she will do everything in her power to address that issue.

“The new clinic will open soon and we would like to see the people of Noordgesig working there. “Even though issues of employment will be handled by the Department of Health, it won’t be right to bring people from other areas to come and work as cleaners when we have women who can do those jobs in the area,” said the councillor.

Transparency and fairness were emphasised not only in the employment of the people but also when it comes to the local SMMEs.

Some of the major projects expected to bring employment opportunities in the area are the clinic, the construction of the new Noordgesig Primary School and the Social Cluster Project which is expected to kick off soon.

Other issues which got people talking in the meeting were illegal dumping sites and ward committee members.

The councillor promised to introduce newly elected ward committee members once she gets the go-ahead from the city council.
