The Meadowlands Youth Desk still continues to help the police fight crime.
Kgopotse Lesejane (20) from Killarney in Orlando West joined the youth desk in March 2016.
“I enjoy volunteering at the youth desk as it exposes us to many opportunities.
“We have different programmes that we attend; we do school talks and educate the youth about crime.”
Onthatile Molefe (20) from Meadowlands Zone 8 said that she joined the youth desk in order to do something with her life.
“I wanted to help the police tackle crime committed by the youth.
“Through the youth desk I went to the traffic college to learn about being a peace officer,” she said.
Mpho Kaweng (25) from Zone 7 said that he joined because he saw the opportunity to help tackle challenges in his area.
“Tomorrow I want to be remembered as an icon that helped the youth.
“The youth desk helped me with avoiding dangerous curiosities such as drugs and crime,” he said.
The Gauteng Youth Crime Prevention Desks are volunteer-based structures based at police stations within the province.
The desks encourage and enable young people to participate actively in identifying the causes of youth violence and crime and to collaborate in creating social crime prevention strategies for their communities
