WATCH: Bianca Basson is Eldos’ own Olympic gold medallist

Raise our fists and say Amandla in celebration of team South Africa

Bianca Basson (18) created waves at the Special Olympics Winter Games in Austria. The South African contingent of 25 athletes returned with 11 gold medals achieved in hockey and skating.

Eldorado Park had reason to celebrate as Basson acquitted herself well and triumphed in the figure skating, walking away with the highly coveted gold medal.

Mathews Phosa, Special Olympics chairperson, sang the team’s praises and said, “A team made of 25 athletes comes back with medals that are more than 90% of the team is unprecedented. There is no team in the country that has achieved such a record of so many medals, gold silver bronze. We must all clap hands and raise our fists and say Amandla in celebration of team South Africa.”

The team arrived home to a hero’s welcome as hundreds of supporters and family members cheered their homecoming at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, on March 25.

Basson’s feat will no doubt have many young athletes from Eldorado Park hoping to emulate her accomplishment.
