UPDATE: Abandoned little ‘Sipho’ still in the care of Child Welfare

Baby “Sipho” still at his temporary home in the hands of social workers

The Langlaagte police social crime unit and the social workers from the department of social welfare conducted a child adoption and safety awareness campaign on March 23, in Zamimpilo informal settlements near Riverlea.

This follows the finding of March 5, when a baby boy was found abandoned in Zamimpilo informal settlements near Riverlea.

Residents of the informal settlement found him and immediately called to report the abandoned baby to the Langlaagte SAPS.

The campaign aims to educate the community on the choices of adoption.

Joburg Child Welfare (JWC) places children in South Africa, Belgium, Finland, and children with special needs are placed with parents in the United States of America.

Before the placing the children, the organisation firsts goes through an adoption process that consists of screening, training, and matching the adoptive parent to a child that has been either abandoned or consented for adoption.

A woman who gives birth and is considering to put their baby up for adoption is first counselled through their choices and the organisation provides a communication gap between relatives and the mother in order to come to a final decision.

Mothers who are struggling financially are also referred to the Princess Alice Adoption Home where they receive accommodation, skills training, and counselling during their pregnancies.

The JWC are active members of the National Adoption Coalition and liaise with all the other adoption homes and centres in South Africa.

A baby boy who was found abandoned was given the name “Sipho Nkosi” and at the time he weighed 3.2 kgs.

Little ‘Sipho’ has now been in the care of social workers for almost three weeks at the Joburg Child Welfare with no one coming to collect him.

If you know anything about the whereabouts of little ‘Sipho’s’ parents or family members whereabouts please contact the child welfare at 011 298 8500, email: director@jhbchildwelfare.org.za  or contact the Langlaagte SAPS at 011 473 6200

If you not sure about keeping your baby, do not allow your child to be a victim of abandonment, do consider adoption.

Over 300 adoptive and foster parents were screened, matched and trained by JWC last year.  Please contact the Joburg Child Welfare for further information on adoption.
