WATCH VIDEO: Haii Suka clothing label aims to be better than swagg

“The number 89 is a tribute to my year of birth”

Flloyd Mahlaka (27) looked at his display of beanies, caps, shorts, hoodies and t-shirts and beamed with pride. Mahlaka is the owner of ‘Haii Suka’ clothing.

The label is close to his heart and has a place in the South African market as attested to by the interest he garnered from residents who attended the I am a woman event on Saturday.

He said, “It started as a hashtag in 2010 and I do all the branding and designs myself. The number ’89’ which appears on some of the items is a tribute to the year of my birth, which is the reason I included it.”

His journey as a budding entrepreneur has not been without its challenges, and he describes difficulties servicing clients outside of Gauteng.

To counter these delays, he makes use the postal service and couriers.

“I have people selling foods as far as Mpumalanga, Durban, Eastern Cape and Botswana, ” he added.

‘Hayi Suka’ is a distinctly South African expression taken from isiZulu and is used in all eleven official languages to reject or dismiss someone or something.

Mahlaka hopes that this uniquely South African brand would do more than compete with other brands and expressions imported from countries like America and instil a sense of pride in South African sayings and customs.
