Soweto Country Club gets a facelift

New state of the art facility to help instill the love of golf in townships.

The Soweto Country Club has been relaunched by the mayor of the City of Joburg Herman Mashaba.

The launch coincides with the start of this year’s Joburg Open.

The clubhouse has been given a huge facelift as part of the development of golf in the township. Attending the launch was legendary Andrew Mlangeni who has for years been a member of the club.

The struggle stalwart and former Robin Island captive urged the community of Pimville and Soweto to protect the state of the art facility.

“The challenge to the club members and the leadership is to go out there and let the people know that this is their facility and they must protect it,” said Mlangeni.

As part of developing golf in townships, learners from schools in Soweto, Eldorado Park, and Alexandra got to be the first ones to test drive the new facility. Professional golfers who will be playing in the Joburg Open gave coaching clinics to the kids.

The club has produced many professional golfers who have gone to take on big tournaments and the city hopes its rebuilding will help produce more.

“This is not only about golf but it is about the rebuilding of our city and the economic transformation. We need to make sure that this new facility produces professionals who will go on to take on big tournaments,” said Mashaba.

The mayor called on the community to protect the new facility and make sure that it does not get vandalised.
