‘All good leaders read, you can’t be a leader if you don’t read’

New blazers to show off as Protea Glen Secondary School learners enhance their reading.

Opening a book and turning the pages with intrigue has never felt so good for the Protea Glen Secondary School learners recently.

The Readers Club Executive of the Nelson Mandela Library situated within the school received new school blazers for the club sponsored by the Timor-Leste Embassy as a first contribution.

Principal Thabani Sokhela said, “The club will be promoted and other learners must be encouraged to read more.

“Reading is important for them to broaden their scope.”

The intention was to promote social cohesion and good relations between the countries.

Sokhela said he intends to introduce the idea of reading in a prescribed time during school in the future.

The school patron, Jose Nascimento who’s a member of a non-government organisation (NGO) called Hellenic, Italian and Portuguese Alliance said, “This goes towards the well-being of the school, towards the promotion of the school and towards social cohesion.”

Nascimento said the embassy wanted to assist in contributing to developing the country and the school.

A total of 13 blazers were donated to the executive committee of the readers club, even though the club has over 100 members.

Dineo Bodibe, the 16-year-old chairperson of the club said, “I’ve been part of the club for four years now and I’m very excited about these blazers because I feel as though we are being appreciated, and we are improving from where we were when we first started it.”

Sepadi Choeu, an English teacher at the school and the chief executive officer of the library said that the idea of the club started as a campaign to promote reading, writing and encouraging learners everywhere that the reading culture is still evident.

The executive members were very excited to put on their new blazers.

Bodibe said, “I hope that other learners can see that they can also benefit from our club.

“We also have a debating team that went to the nationals which should be motivation enough for others to join.”
