Spreading the power of words through reading

Literacy is an initiative the world has taken upon themselves to spread bookworm fever.

The power of reading is empowering to oneself, but the power of reading aloud to others empowers a nation, as we celebrate World Read Aloud Day.

The purpose of the day is to stimulate adults, teens, and children all around the world to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people.

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries, thanks to people who participate and spread the word across the globe.

This day is also an opportunity for bookworms to share their love of reading and to promote the right to literacy for everyone.

South Africa has been involved for quite a few years now, in 2014; 50 000 children were read aloud to, in 2015 the celebrations reached 166 360 children and last year with the help of parents, teachers, librarians, family members and hundreds of readers, more than double of the previous year’s number of children were read to, i.e. 365 849 children.

Nal`ibali and the Soweto Theatre will be hosting children from four Early Child Development Centres from Soweto.

Nomsa Mazwai, the General Manager of Soweto Theatre and also a talented musician will together with the theatre`s Customer Service Manager, Didimalang Sole be reading for the children.

For more information on how to get involved in the initiative please contact Khosi Hlatshwayo Community and Audience Development Manager on 011 930 7461/2 or 071 551 0720.
