Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, congratulated the township schools that achieved a 100% mark in the National Senior Certificate 2016 academic examinations.
In total, 32 schools in Gauteng achieved a 100% mark, the highest in the country.
One of the schools hailed by the MEC for education was Madibane Comprehensive School in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Madibane High School is one of the oldest secondary schools in Soweto. The school was established in 1939 in Western Township.
It relocated to Diepkloof in 1963 due to forceful removals and was named Madibane High after the then principal Harry Percival ‘The Shark” Madibane.
The Principal for the school, Lehlohono Molefe said, “I was humbled by our school’s showcase of excellence because we were supposed to be a write off school due to the series of robberies we experienced during 2016. Our learners made us proud and put us on the map.”

Another school that achieved a 100% is Prudens Secondary School in Tladi, Soweto.
These schools are part of the Secondary School Intervention Programme (SSIP), which is a research-driven programme that targets and supports learners on subjects and topics they normally struggle with at school.
The MEC of Education congratulated the schools and welcomed them to the prestigious league of high performing schools.
Lesufi said: “These schools have proven that township schools can excel and break the shackles of poverty, and I pledge to provide all the necessary support they need.”
In recognition of their performance, the schools will get the following benefits:
- Top three learners will receive a full bursary from the department.
- The school will be added to the list of full ICT schools.
- Learners from Grade eight to 12 will receive tablets. All classrooms will be refurbished and smart boards installed and educators will be provided with laptops.

The department is pleased by the progress made by a number of schools that achieved a 100% pass mark in 2016.
The spokesperson for GDE Oupa Bodibe said: “This achievement makes us proud as the department and confirms that the investment made to improve schools in the townships are bearing fruits.
“The department will work hard to increase the number of schools in the township that achieve 100%.”
