Battling baby bumps in schools

Summit aimed at informing learners about the dangers of unprotected sex

High school learners are most at risk of falling pregnant and contracting a myriad of unprotected sex related infections.

This is caused by factors such as; peer pressure, a lack of awareness about the dangers of unprotected sex and engaging in behaviours such as underage drinking with its inherent dangers that can lead to teenagers falling pregnant while still at school.

The Learner Pregnancy Summit was hosted at Fun Valley Pleasure Resort on February 1 by Mathilda Skosana, deputy chief education specialist and Sheldene Sons, life skills HIV/AIDS coordinator at Johannesburg Central District.

A number of Eldorado Park secondary schools attended the summit, among them were Eldomaine, Kliptown, Eldorado Park and Willow Crescent Secondary Schools.

Zola Primary School, under the supervision of educator Jabu Rambau, provided the entertainment as the programme got under way.

Speakers from the Department of Health, Teddy Bear Clinic and community activists Fagmeda Edries and Linda Hedley touched on issues affecting teenagers such as HIV/AIDS prevention, substance abuse among teenagers and teenage pregnancy.
