The City of Johannesburg commemorates disability awareness

A day for the disabled youth.

The City of Johannesburg Region D hosted an open day for the disable youth from ward 40, 41, 42, 43 and 45 at Bapedi Hall in Meadowlands on November 09.

Zanele Modise from the City of Johannesburg responsible for citizen relationship and urban management said that they normally have open days for the youth by working with different service providers.

“The service providers offer career guidance and opportunities to the youth.
“We have open days once a quarter since last year by going to different venues in the region.
“What we noted in those open days is that we do not have a lot of young people with disabilities participating.
“So today we decided to give our attention to the youth with disabilities so that they get to interact with us and also encourage them to participate in programs that we offer,” said Modise.

According to Modise they chose this day also to commemorate the National Disability Rights Awareness Month which started on November 3. Different displays from different stakeholders explained what they offer and how to apply for employment or bursaries in their organisation.

The different stakeholders included; The Department of Social Development, Emergency Management Service (EMS), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Department of Health, Department of Labour, Department of Agriculture, Harambe, African Co-operating desk and 1st Generation Foundation.
The youth that attended the open day spend the day interacting with different organisation.
Modise said that they will continue hosting open days like this one.
