World Town Planning Day kicks off in Bramfischer

“The City of Johannesburg has many departments that work together collectively to serve the community"

The Department of Development Planning visited the Bramfischerville Multi-Purpose Centre in Phase 2 as part of the Joburg celebration of world town planning day.

The purpose of the visit according to the deputy director for legal admin Hector Makhubo is to inform the community about the service offered by the department.

“The reason we came here today is because of the town planning day.
“We are visiting different regions in fact today is our kick off at Region C,” he said.

Makhubo said that there are a lot of regulatory things that the community should know when the development is taking place.

“If for instance there is a street project taking place in the community, the community needs to question the project and ask about the building plans,” he said.

Different employees from the department introduced their sector and how it functions.

The Bramfischer community welcomed the visit with questions concerning their community such as not having a clinic, police station, skill centre and sports recreation centres.

Makhubo noted down all the concerns raised by the community and said that they will look into them.

World Town Planning Day is a day marked by at least 30 countries and is set aside for planners around the world to raise awareness on town planning and its importance in communities through various activities including workshops, open days, and career guidance sessions.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Development Planning and Urban Management, Councillor Funzela Ngobeni said: “World Town Planning Day is an opportunity to put the spotlight on the discipline and increase the benefits attainable from enhancing positive aspects of town planning.

“The discipline of town planning is central to attaining economically vibrant, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable cities.
According to Ngobeni town planning has been central in defining the long-term development thrust of the city – in pursuit of economic growth and sustainable development.

“As part of this cities need to ensure that they are efficiently laid out, take into account environmental and socio-economic considerations, such as equitable distribution of the urban dividend.”

Ngobeni encourages residents, business, and students and just about everyone to make time to attend these sessions they’ll be hosting because there is definitely something to be discovered and learned.

The open day will also be held in Dobsonville at Kopanong community hall on November 17.
