McDonalds gives a treat to mothers of sick children

Mothers are urged to use McDonald Family rooms at Chris Hani Baragwanath.

McDonald’s South Africa shared their 21st birthday with new mothers at the Ronald McDonald House of Charities (RMHC) SA Family Rooms, at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

The Family Rooms are a resting and regroup area within the hospital for the families of children undergoing treatment. The rooms also cater for mothers of children in the neonatal intensive care units at the hospital.

The McDonald’s team went to the family rooms to deliver a delicious lunch of Big Macs on Big Mac Day to the (RMHC) SA Family Rooms and spent some time with the women.

The Chief Marketing Officer for McDonald’s South Africa, Daniel Padiachy, said, “Today is not just about honouring the Big Mac burger, it’s about us sharing and celebrating all the little moments of loving that our customers have shared.”

The Family Rooms serve more than 100 mothers a day and are a place of rest from the hospital environment during their visits to their children.

The Family Rooms operate from 8am to 6pm daily.

The mothers are provided with refreshments and motivational talks to bring comfort.

Unathi Jobela said, “Helping a sick child fight their illness takes a big enough emotional toll on a family, let alone a financial strain.”

McDonald understood the need to improve the lives of children and their families during difficult times, so they created the (RMHC) family rooms to help decrease the pressure on mothers.

The RMHC SA is McDonald’s South Africa’s charity of choice and remains its largest corporate donor. In addition to the two RMHC SA Family Rooms at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, McDonald’s will open the first Ronald McDonald House in Africa, alongside the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in December.
