Madondo is Number one legend

KYP founder Thulani Madondo has been honoured once again for his good deeds

Thulani Madondo has been celebrated and recognised in different countries for the good work he and his Kliptown Youth Programme (KYP) are doing for the community.

Madondo’s work has not only helped uplift young people from Kliptown but it has elevated him to legendary status as well.

This year he is one of the legends to be celebrated in the IWISA No1 Legends Show to be aired on SABC 1 next month.

Initiated by IWISA maize meal, the show takes a look at six ordinary South Africans who come from very humble beginnings who launch their community development projects which are hard to ignore.

It follows their journey and tells their life stories and what drives them and the passion they have for community development.

Of course, it’s not only about posing in front of the camera and being on TV for Madondo and KYP but there are a lot of benefits that comes with the project.

Through the project, a solar system and a generator have been donated to KYP in a bid to counter the challenge of electricity.

This will not only help keep the lights on at KYP but it will help keep computer classes at the centre going as well.

“This is not a celebration of Thulani Madondo but a celebration of the good work that KYP is doing in our community,” said Madondo.

“As an organisation that provides free basic computer classes and serve 460 young people from the community, we are grateful to IWISA for choosing us to be part of this project.”

Madondo is positive that the new generator and solar will keep computer classes running in an area facing a challenge of electricity shortage.

Free computer classes are not the only thing KYP is known for. The organisation is big on youth development and runs a variety of programmes focusing on education and employment with Madondo is at the helm of it all.

Kgothatso Radebe from IWISA said the project is all about identifying and assisting key projects within communities that empower people.

“As a brand, we have decided to embark on this initiative because we believe that communities are much stronger and progressive when they work together.

“As a way of giving back, we had to identify these key projects and assist them with whatever resources they need to keep the momentum going,” said Radebe.

All the giving back to the community and assisting organisations like KYP takes place behind the scenes. In front of the cameras is Kwaito legend Kabelo Mabalane presenting the show. The choice to have Kabelo presenting the show was deliberate as he is a legend himself like Madondo.
