Transformer explosion rocks Southgate Mall, Johannesburg

Southgate shopping centre was the centre of activity for ER24 paramedics on October 26 after a transformer explosion rocked the parking lot this morning.

According to Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, a man and woman were injured in the blast and were transported to a private hospital in Johannesburg where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.

Meiring said, “On assessment, paramedics discovered that the man had sustained burn wounds over most of his body, leaving him in a critical condition. The woman was found with moderate burns to her body.”

ER24 paramedics treated the patients, applying a number of advanced life support interventions before the critically injured man was airlifted to hospital for treatment. The woman was transported by ambulance to receive further treatment at the hospital.

Meiring says that investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
