Old Age Village targeted by thugs, Eldos

A spike in thefts and burglaries.

Following the recent spate of burglaries and thefts at the old age village in Extension Three, the Social Crime Prevention Unit, headed by sergeant Natasha Govender, headed out on October 20 to distribute pamphlets and engaged with the residents to ascertain what their concerns were.

A door-to-door visit was conducted and police contact information provided to all the residents. The elderly residents of the village expressed their concern that they are being targeted by criminal elements within the community.

Bernard Smith, a resident said, “There have been a number of break-ins and thefts because criminals jump over the boundary wall and wait for the occupants to leave for regular check-ups at the clinic before pouncing.”

Another resident, Benny Ruthman suggested the introduction of police whistles which would discourage perpetrators from committing these types of crimes at the village.

Ruthman and his spouse Elaine thanked the officers and said, “It’s very encouraging to see that the police are concerned about our safety because many are infirm and we cannot chase down burglars at our age.”

Harold Parry who also resides at the village said that he occasionally conducts patrols around the perimeter as a result of the spike in burglaries and thefts and added that it was nice to see it has not gone unnoticed and welcomed police intervention.
