Bhukulani rewards top pupils

Total South Africa sponsored the ceremony.

Total South Africa rewarded hard working pupils in Bhukulani Secondary School in Zondi Soweto on October 19.

The school has been famous for producing brilliant matric pass rates since the new principal was appointed in 1998. The school underwent a huge transformation under the leadership of Principal Mduduzi Maphindakazi Mathe.

Total SA was delighted by the improvement of the school in less than a year. Pupils must have a 40% mark in at least three subjects and 30% in three more subjects; the results in Bhukulani have been far more than the national average.

Every beginning of the year the staff and governance set targets and work around meeting those targets. The school’s enrollment has gone from 611 pupils in 1998 to the current 1 200 pupils.

Mathe said, “Our pupils are groomed from Grade Eight. We instil hard working morals from a tender age and would like to thank Total SA for acknowledging our efforts.”

Mathe explained that, “Since the school partnered with Total SA in 2013, more pupils are motivated to work harder.”

The principal’s leadership restored the culture of learning and teaching in the school.  His method has helped the school achieve a 70% matric pass rate as compared to the previous 21.5 %.

The sustainable development manager of Total SA, Nyameka Makonya said, “We were impressed by the school’s achievements over the years.”

Makonya explained that even though Bhukulani Secondary School is a typical no-fee township school like most schools in the townships, its entire staff and parents encourage the pupils to achieve wonders.

Makonya said, “We believe that if Bhukulani Secondary School can do it, so can any other township school.”
