Recruitment of nurses and doctors in Health industry on the increase

Residents from Westside feel they are being overlooked.

In an effort to capacitate employees at public health facilities, the Gauteng Department of Health has from January to August this year, recruited a total number of 3,256 medical doctors and nurses respectively.

An open-ended block advertisement for clinical posts which runs throughout the 2016/17 financial year for all vacant funded posts (doctors and nurses) was released by the Department in May.

There was a net gain of 2227 nurses by the end of August and 1029 medical practitioners.

The walk-in applications and improvement of working conditions through provision of medical equipment is also contributing to recruitment and retention of staff.

Residents in Westside have spoken out saying that people from other areas are being hired in local clinics and hospitals.

Rendy Matee from Bosmont said they have people with the expertise but they are overlooked.

“We have tried applying for posts but nothing has come to light.

“How can the government say they are providing opportunities but then the people of the community are overlooked,” said Matee.

Paul Vries said with the new clinic opening in Westbury soon, it will still be flooded with people from Soweto and other areas.

“Even though you apply it still goes to the unknown and the unknown treats our people badly,” said Vries.

MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu said the availability of health professionals is critical in building an effective health system following the recruitment results.

“It contributes towards the attainment of a long and healthy life for all.

“The Department addresses vacancies through recruitment and training.

“Gauteng has continued to be a province that produces the highest number of health professionals at its training institutions,” said MEC Qedani Mahlangu.
