Sexism complaint filed against Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba

Mashaba is expected to respond to these demands within 7 working days.

A group of women known as the #SexismMustFall met at the metropolitan centre in Braamfontein to lodge a formal sexism complaint against the City of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba at the Commission for Gender Equality.

This was triggered by the statement made by Mashaba that “The days when the ANC administration allowed their girlfriends to run state institutions are over.”

This statement angered the women who assert that the statement insinuates that they prostituted themselves into top jobs and this level of insult and sexism cannot go unchallenged.

Chairperson of #SexismMustFall Loyiso Masuku said: “First of all we are demanding an apology as well as a retraction publicly and thirdly we want to know the plans the executive mayor has to ensure that women are empowered and we reach a point where gender equality is at its maximum in the city of Johannesburg.”

“We are here to ask, can the commission work with us and work for us in ensuring that Mashaba accounts for his disrespect for women.”

The chairperson of the Commission on Gender Equality Mfanozwele Shozi said that as the commission, they accept the memorandum and they are going to put the memorandum trough a scrutiny of the investigation process of the gender commission.

“We plead with the organisers to be available when we need particular information and if there is any other information that you think it’s going to assist the commission and its investigation please provide them to us,” said Shozi.

The women said that Mashaba cannot come today and insult them like this: “His insulted his own mother, his own sister and if he continues treating women in disdain then he is going to see the rot of women.”
