Over 180 fines have so far been issued since September.

A total of 139 notices and 182 fines have been issued to those not adhering to the level water restrictions since September 5.

MMC for Environmental and Infrastructure Services Department Anthony Still said this is noted in section 44 (3) of the water services by-law.

Still, at a press briefing held at the Johannesburg Water head office said that it has not been easy to get residents to pay their fines as officials are not lawmakers.

“The cities of Tshwane‚ Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni are enforcing water restrictions and penalties.

“The newly introduced water throttling system is the reduction on the inflow of water into a supply area,” said Still.

The city said it will be implementing this to all areas in Johannesburg until the water supply is stable enough to avoid level three water restrictions.
