Nestlé Celebrates National Nutrition Week with a blast!

Supply of healthy food at schools has become significant to the Department of Basic Education and its partners.

Nestlé South Africa in partnership with Department of Basic Education celebrated National Nutrition Week (NNW) in Limpopo and Eastern on the week of October 9 to 15.

NNW was celebrated under a theme called “Love your beans-eat dry beans, peas and lentils”.

The NNW aims to encourage healthy eating and activities to avoid non- communicable and lifestyle diseases at a young age.

DBE identified Makgane Primary School (Limpopo) to host this year’s celebration after an incident of food poisoning that happened at the school in 2015.

The Limpopo leg of the NNW took place on October 11.

The celebrations also included a creation of awareness, specifically focused on food handling by all stakeholders.

The National Nutrition Week is celebrated annually with the aim of raising awareness and supporting the school community by eating healthy and making lifestyle choices.

Nestlé Group Public Affairs Executive, Motshidisi Mokwena said: “Nestlé Healthy Kids programme contributes to the wellbeing of pupils by promoting healthy lifestyles and physical education and highlighting education enhancement programmes for pupils, teachers and parents.

“We are in full support of the department’s strategy on nutrition education at schools and we believe that through our partnership, much can still be achieved if we continue to creatively merge our nutrition programmes and endeavour to reach out to all our primary school pupils in South Africa,” said Mokwena.

Pupils played fun games and participate in physical activities and demonstrations which will include basketball, soccer, netball, hula hoop, skipping rope, volleyball and rumba dance in an effort to promote physical education.
