Residents from Kathrada Park move into incomplete RDP houses

The residents have been living in the houses for 6 months.

Residents from Kathrada Park have decided to move into the empty stands and complete them themselves.

The houses have been occupied illegally for six months by residents who were living in the informal settlement and they have vowed not to move.

In an article dated April 10, 2014, on the Westside-Eldos website 172 stands were promised by then housing MMC Dan Bovu but to no avail.

Resident Denzel Morgan has even installed his own toilet in the house.

“We have been suffering tremendously when we were living in the shacks but this time we vow not to move.

“I have even put my own tiles in the house and completed the ceiling installations out of my own pocket,” said Morgan.

But now residents in and around Westside who have applied for houses at this settlement have voiced their opinion saying the illegal occupants must move.

“We have applied in 1997 for an RDP house but have received nothing as yet and now some other people who do not belong there have moved in,” said Keisha Kahn from Westbury.

Ward 82 Councillor Susan Stewart said she appeals to the provincial housing department to communicate their intention.

“With regards to the completion of the Kathrada Park/New Claremont RDP Housing Development Project started by Provincial Government in 2002 I appeal for a completion date.

“After 14 years, the project is yet to be completed.

“The increasingly high influx of informal settlers in the area, with no attempts by the authorities to curb this problem,  is an added frustration to the residents of Kathrada Park and all of the surrounding areas being affected,” said Stewart.
