UPDATE: The pupils are likely to be expelled from school – GDE

Three pupils involved in manhandling a teacher are in hot water.

The Gauteng Department of Education has provided an update on the matter regarding pupils who have been suspended from school for assaulting a teacher.

The suspension comes after a video went viral on social media depicting a teacher being manhandled by pupils.

GDE confirmed that the incident happened at Emshukantambo Secondary School in Pimville Zone 1.

Spokesperson Oupa Bodibe said: “The school conducted a disciplinary hearing and the recommendation was that the pupils must be expelled from the school.

“The school is currently preparing the recommendations to be forwarded to the Head of Department for his consideration on the matter.

“In case the HOD approves these pupils’ expulsion, the district will arrange for them to be placed at other schools.

“All three pupils are currently sitting at home,” he said.

Bodibe said the school has made arrangements with their parents to collect school work on their behalf so that they do not fall behind with their studies.

“Once placed at new schools, they will attend diversion programme on behavioural change through institutions recommended and monitored by the district,” said Bodibe.
